Media Accountability in Transition

The Erich Brost Institute for International Journalism supported media transformations in Egypt and Tunisia in the fall of 2012 with the project "Media Accountability in Transition." The project was funded by the Federal Foreign Office and is part of the official German-Egyptian and German-Tunisian transformation partnerships.

Since the Arab Spring, the framework conditions for media and journalists in the Arab world have undergone a radical transformation. Seminars in Cairo and Tunis aimed to promote independent, critical, and professional reporting on the ground and to encourage media representatives to defend their newly gained media freedom. Senior editors and influential media makers discussed the potentials of independent media self-regulation: What contribution can ombudsmen make to strengthening trust in media? How can codes of ethics and independent press councils influence journalistic quality?
