How the institute was established

The Erich Brost Institute for Journalism in Europe has been founded in March 1991 as a scientific and non-profit institute on the initiative of Prof. Dr. Gerd. G. Kopper. It was initiated through a charity found by Erich Brost (1993-1995), publisher of the WAZ media group.

The first goal of the new institute was to establish a network of European journalism educational institutions. Over the years, the institute also became a place for innovations in European journalism research and education. Extended donations made it possible to realize research projects and publication series.

In 2002, the institute received an own academic center at the North Campus of the Technical University Dortmund: the Erich Brost House. The house serves as an communication center for international conferences in the field of journalism.
